DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of the Victoria Terminus, which is now known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture with influence of Indian architectural traditions. The building was designed by British architect Frederick William Stevens starting in 1878 and was completed in 1887.
The structure is detailed with Indian themes influenced by the subcontinent?s flora and fauna and the facade features stone portraits of former directors of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.
In 1996, the station was renamed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in honour of Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire. In 2017 the name was changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus after the Fadnavis Ministry passed a resolution to change the name to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in the Maharashtra Assembly.
The majestic Victorian Gothic Revival structure was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2004, and is rightfully known as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. It is currently the headquarters of the Central Railways.
